Prime Label Materials

A prime label can be constructed using a number of variable components and each one is critical to your operation including ease of application, strength, life span, design layout and shape.

Prime Label Face Stocks

Crucial to any quality prime label is choosing the right face stock. Peacock Bros. offer a wide range of face stocks, each having specific features to satisfy the requirements of the majority of applications.

Self-adhesive Papers

Prime Labels can be constructed using a number of variable components

Using paper is versatile, economical, and recyclable, easily printed which makes it acceptable for many general applications. Peacock Bros offer a wide variety of papers making it easy to cut into virtually any shape and easy to apply using automatic equipment.
  • High Gloss White is a cast coated paper that has a super gloss finish giving bright and vivid definition colour to your labels.
  • Semi-gloss has a muted finish compared to high gloss, but more economical.
  • Metallized paper has superior print quality giving dazzling colour allowing for gold and silver highlights.
  • Thermal Top is a thermally coated paper used for printing variable data on short term labels. A cost effective alternative to thermal transfer for weigh scale labels, shelf labelling and other barcode product labels. Printing is a little muted due to the face stock.
  • Thermal Transfer is a top coat matt paper used for printing variable data with a thermal transfer printer and wax or wax resin ribbon. Primarily used for labels that needs to last and not fade over extended periods of time.

Self Adhesive Films

Films are ideal for curved or squeezable products since they offer conformability and are moisture resistant and durable. Peacock Bros films are also designed for ease of use with automatic label applicators

  • PolyGloss White is a flexible high gloss film that is durable and is suited for multi-colour and colour process printing.
  • Opalux White is a satin finished economy product that is suitable for a large range of applications. It is suitable for both multi-colour and colour process printing.
  • PP Matt has a muted finish and used for more robust and durable applications.
  • PolyClear is perfect for creating a no label look allowing your product to shine through when using a clear container. Both multi-colour and process colour printing will give the label a bright and lustrous look.

Tag Stocks and Unsupported Films

PolyTag is a very durable tear and weather resistant film with a matt finish that is generally used in tagging material, carpet and sacks of seed, food, spices and the like items.

  • MG tag is a paper tag with an extremely high-gloss finish which is commonly used for retail swing tags.

Prime Label Topcoats

  • UV Gloss Varnish can improve your label appearance by an attention-getting high shine finish to part or the entire label that also gives protection to the text and graphics.
  • PE and Polyester Laminates can be applied to the label surface giving it extra strength, durability and shine of prime labels.

Prime Label Adhesives

Pressure-sensitive adhesive works not only because of its tack, but also due to the slight absorption of the adhesive into the surface of the substrate. Certain characteristics of different substrates can prevent the absorption of adhesive, weakening the adhesion of the label.

When deciding on an adhesive, it is important to consider a few factors:

  • Substrate material and texture—Prime labels adhere differently to different materials. For example, an adhesive that is right for smooth plastic may not be ideal for pebbled glass bottles.
  • Substrate shape—When dealing with curved substrates, it is important to use an adhesive with a high degree of initial tack, since it will hold the label in place for the few seconds required for the substrate to anchor the adhesive. If the substrate is designed to be squeezeble, then the adhesive requires a level of conformability while still maintaining its hold.
  • Substrate temperature—If a prime label and its substrate are exposed to extreme cold or a hot-fill process during application, an adhesive must be specially formulated to maintain its tack.
Prime label adhesives need to cover a range of factors

Rubber & Acrylic Adhesives

Typically, rubber-based adhesives are less expensive, but lack cold or low temperature-resistant qualities. Acrylic adhesives have a lower degree of initial tack than rubber-based, however, after a 24-hour set period, acrylic adhesives are generally as permanent as rubber-based adhesives. Plus, acrylic adhesives can be created to resist high heat and freezing temperatures. Weber offers both rubber-based and acrylic adhesives in a range of different formulations:

  • Standard permanent adhesive—Good general purpose, rubber-based adhesives that offer a high degree of initial tack.
  • Acrylic permanent adhesive—These adhesives resist hot temperatures, oxidation, and moisture.
  • Cold temperature adhesive—Acrylic adhesives specially formulated to maintain adhesion in freezing temperatures.
  • Removable adhesives—Usually acrylic, these adhesives are designed to adhere firmly, but peel off easily, leaving the label and substrate intact.
  • Specialty adhesives—Peacock Bros additionally offers a selection of adhesives designed to meet very specific labeling operations, such as adhesive for labels that need to be removed and repositioned. Please consult with a Peacock Bros account representative.

Prime Label Construction & Styles

Now that you’ve learned about the different label materials and adhesives Peacock Bros offers, take a look at some of our innovative label constructions and styles

Reverse print and Multi-part Labels

Reverse print labels are primarily used for placing information on a clear polypropylene or glass bottle so that information can be read through the bottle and contents. They are also used for placing on glass windows and car windscreens capture attention.

These types of labels are generally produced on a clear synthetic material and printed in reverse to create the see through look. Labels can easily be removed or repositioned and the label life span is dependant on the material and adhesive used.

Multipart Labels

Multi-part labels are generally used for traceability, special offers, hidden or additional information such as a coupon. Information can appear underneath or on the back of the label when peeled away and easily resealed for repeated use. Multi layer coupons are also available for product instructions and promotion

Foil Hot Stamp & Cold Foil Transfer

Foil stamping and embossing give prime labels an added decorative touch and a more elegant, prestigious look. With embossing, a metal plate of a specific image is created and then pressed onto the label material, leaving behind the image. Foil stamping works in a similar way, but the image is transfered rather than pressed onto the label surface. Embossing looks best on paper facestock, while hot stamping creates a striking image on metallized paper and film.

"No-Label" Look

The no-label look is a popular trend in the food and beverage industries, as well as with personal care products. These clear or translucent, thin film labels are perfect for showcasing graphics and allowing the color of the product to shine through. All graphics are printed using the rotary screen UV process for superior durability, brilliance and depth of color. This thin film label is highly flexible, adhering to straight, curved, or recessed glass and plastic better than paper labels. Plus, thin film can tolerate freezing, pasteurization, and moisture without losing adhesion strength or readability.

Peacock Bros. can meet the product branding needs of any industry including Foof & Beverage, Health & Beauty, Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements, Household Products and Automotive Aftermarket
  • Food & Beverage - Prime labels on food items face many environmental challenges, such as freezing, moisture, and heat. Industry and governmental regulations require nutritional and ingredient information to be completely legible on all products, making high-quality prime labels a necessity. Peacock Bros can create durable and attractive prime labels for any food product. A laminated label with cold-temperature-resistant adhesive is best for frozen foods. For products with curves or squeezable containers, conformable facestock is the best choice.
  • Health & Beauty - Durability is crucial in designing prime labels for health and beauty packaging. These labels need to withstand the factory filling process and survive repeated customer use, which often requires prolonged exposure to moisture in the shower or bathroom. The majority of health and beauty products are packaged in curved containers, so conformability is important, too. Health and beauty prime labels featuring hot or cold stamping or embossed logos give the products a sophisticated and elegant image, which translates into a higher perception of product quality by consumers.
  • Vitamins & Nutritional Supplements - Pharmaceutical packaging regulations are extremely stringent with detailed requirements for labelling. Since the labels need to provide detailed use information and warnings, the labels must be resistant to chipping or scraping so the very small print is always legible. The label also must adhere permanently to the container for the life of the product.
  • Household Products - The prime labels used in household chemical package decoration need to tolerate the product filling process, where the labels may come in contact with the products. Much of the packaging is curved and textured and there is usually a good deal of text required on the label. A laminated prime label will work well for household chemical packaging since it can resist moisture.
  • Automotive Aftermarket - Just as with household chemical labeling, the prime labels for automotive aftermarket products need to be durable. Not only will the labels be exposed to the product in the factory, but also during customer use. The prime label needs to be easily wiped clean and still have the use instructions and product warnings clearly legible.
